About 17th Century

17th century was divided into two ages or era.

The Puritan age or age of Milton during 1600 to 1660. And restoration age or age of Dryden during 1660 to 1700. Puritan age was further divided into two periods the first Jacobean age or period during 1603 to 1625, the ruler of jacobean period was James 1 and second Caroline age or period during 1625 to 1649, the ruler of Caroline period was Charles 1 and the Restoration Period or the Age of Dryden (1660-1700).

The Jacobean era was the time when James I was King of England, between 1603 to 1625. We call it the Jacobean era, because Jacobus is the Latin version of the name James.( Latin form of the English name James ) King James 1 was also the king of Scotland, in Scotland he was known as king James 6. He was ruling both England and Scotland, he was called the king of great Britain. King James 1 was a strong advocate of royal absolutism, Which means that the king decision is final.

The Caroline era was the time when Charles 1 was King of England, between 1603 to 1625. We call it the Caroline era, because Carolus is the Latin version of the name 'charles.( Latin form of the English name Charles )

The Seventeenth Century was marked by the decline of the Renaissance spirit, and the writers either imitated the great masters of Elizabethan period or followed new paths. We no longer find great imaginative writers of the stature of Shakespeare, Spenser and Sidney. There is a marked change in temperament which may be called essentially modern. Though during the Elizabethan period, the new spirit of the Renaissance had broken away with the medieval times.
